An
Arizona gourd artist whose love of art goes back to elementary
school, Judy holds both a Bachelor and Master of Arts in Art
Education and taught Art in the NJ public schools for over
13 years. During
that time, Judy worked as a fiber artist, incorporating a wide
variety of techniques, materials, textures, and colors into
her mixed-media fiber creations.
Judy says, “When I discovered gourds, it was a perfect
transition from my earlier textile work. At heart, I am
a mixed-media artist. And gourds enable me to continue
creating mixed-media sculpture. Each
piece I work on goes through a discovery process. I am
not a big planner, and prefer an evolution which includes trying
multiple approaches and materials, before the work is finished. Many
times I will dream about a particular piece or pieces I’m
working on. Usually, I have three or four pieces going
at a time.”
Judy is a member of Art League West; the American
and Arizona Gourd Societies; and the Tolleson, AZ Gourd Patch. She
holds “Juried
Artist” status through
the Arizona Art Alliance. Judy has won multiple awards
over the past 7 years in a variety of venues; most recently
taking a first place award in an Art League West Exhibit in Glendale,
AZ. She exhibits her work in shops, galleries, and art
shows. In
addition, she enjoys volunteering with children when her schedule
permits, teaching them to create art with gourds and other media.
Judy loves Arizona and feels so lucky to live here, surrounded
by so much inspiration. The spellbinding beauty and shades
of the desert are reflected in her innovative use of color and
design. She has a framed quote in her home, which sums
it all up for her.
“Lord, thank you for letting me see the colors.”
